Below you find the interview to Balázs “Don” Buza leader of the steampunk band called “Lies of the machine”; good reading and good listening of their EP “Daemoncog”

D) Lies of the machine è un nome interessante , da dove viene?

Cheerz,
Don from LOTM

Q) Lies of the machine is an interesting name, where does it comes from? Why this choice?

Well, the name actually started of as Heart Of The Machine, or Machineheart, but as we got along the way of creating our songs, telling the stories of the dystopian world we dreamed, we thought this would be more fitting.

Q) How was the band formed?

The band was formed late spring of 2013 after a long and painful search for members. Why was it so long and painful? Because, whereas there were many musicians looking for a rock/metal band around that time, steampunk, as a musical genre (and actually, as whole) was quite unknown in our little country. Sure, there may have been a few people, who had some hazy ideas about what steampunk is (‘aren’t steampunks those fruity guys in those tall hats, with funny looking clothes? Ah, so lame…”), but the majority thought we want to create some kind of a twisted tribute to Sex Pistols. Thankfully, by the beginning of May, our ragtag group of misfits was finally brought together, and lo, Lies Of the Machine was formed.

Q) How does the songwriting process go for you?

Merrily! 😀 We write the songs together, everyone taking some part in the process. It usually starts with Milán (bass), Gergő (guitars) and myself, creating the core and concept of the song, then we bring it to the rehearsal, and boom: here’s a new song. Naturally, after everyone does their part, and adds their vision to it, it doesn’t even resemble the original, and that’s why we love it so much!

Q) Are you already thinking about a new CD or is it still to early for that?

To be honest, we just finished one of our brand new songs, so you might say, we are working on our new material. We plan to record this song around the end of april, so that we can start of the summer with it. Regarding longer releases: sure, we are thinking about creating a whole album, but I think we are going to release another EP before that.

Q) What is the leitmotif that permeates the lyrics of your songs?

There are several, I think. All of our songs have a kind of twisted/grimdark humour behind them, even the happy ones, so I think, that’s a focal point. The main concept is centered around the despotic rule of the Machine Lord, who proclaims he does everything in the name of peace, prosperity and the good of all…I think you are getting the idea! 😉

Of course, there are people who oppose this rule (as told in Defiance and Rise), and there are some, who just don’t give a f**k, like the airship vagabonds telling the story of Vasilij.

Q) What are the strengths and weaknesses you see in the Hungarian steampunk, and metal, music scene at the level of music and above?

Whoah, that’s a nice question, with a loooooong answer, so I’ll try to keep it short. Hungary is new to steampunk in general, as I said, most people don’t really know what it is. The community is growing though, and we love to see more and more people taking interest in this culture. This is both a pro and a con thing, if you think about it. It’s good, that we the community is growing, and bad, since it’s still quite small. We, the members of LOTM, would like to speed up the process, and bring steampunk to the “masses”. On the side of metal…well, it’s complicated. We received and epic amount of hate when we first stepped up, so it was not such a great start. The metal scene in Hungary, is quite rigid, sticking to old, last century genres and motifs, not quite ready for anything new. I think people were also not quite sure, what to expect of steampunk bands, and when we came out with “Daemocog” and the eclectic music on it, some reacted very harshly to us. Thankfully, when the larger public got wind of our efforts, things changed, and the support started coming in…now we are on the verge of WORLD DOMINATION!

Okay, just kidding! Still, things are getting better. we have booked gi,gs and the press starts to recognize us too! 🙂

Q) You think the the Steampunk music can explode in Europe like in the US?

Absolutely! Why wouldn’t it? this is the hotbed of the culture that brew steampunk in the first place!

Q) You find easy to play live, or even you suffer (as many bands) of shortage of opportunities live?

Nah, actually, we are getting a lot of attention from the organizers, lately, so we have plenty of opportunity. I think we are a typical live band. A lot of people came up to me after our debut gig, and said, that it’s completely different from the album, way more powerful and entertaining,

Q) Where can our readers find your physical cd? (If you sell it or share it only the digital version it’s the same 🙂 )

We don’t have any physical releases yet, only digital. I, personally, believe, that all our material till the frist full-length album will be digital only, furthermore, just as it is with “Daemocog”, will be completely free. If people want to support us, they may – in the future – donate an amount of their choosing for our songs. By the way, Daemocog can be downloaded from our Facebook profile at www.facebook.com/liesofthemachine .

Q) What are your plans for the future?

Work-work-work,aaaand some more work. Maybe some relaxation. Jokes aside, we have lots of plans to work out, we want to finish the material for our new EP, and would like to play on as many events, as possible. Even now, the beautiful Anais from Poison Garden is helping me devise a plan for LOTM and themselves, to conquer Italy in the Summer together!

Q) Some info about the characters and why you use the playing cards for the photoset of the band?

Actually, it was our graphic designer’s idea. I wanted a cover with clockwork automatons riding pink unicorns across the Byfrost, but Cyrgaan slapped me twice, brought me a beer, and produced his (clearly better) idea. He listened to our songs, and transformed the band into playing cards sitting on one of the taverns so usually frequented by the air vagabonds.I have to agree, thi is better. You guys should check out his other works too on deviantart, the man has some sick talents!

Q) Why steampunk music? What is the main theme in the steampunk culture that brings you in this stylistic choice?

Me being into the whole cogs-gears-dystopian future-magic whaccamacallit! Apart from this, the musical freedom it provides, since steampunk music is not such a rigid genre as the others (e.g. metal) are. I fell in love with it on first sight, and successfully infested the other members too!

Q) What is for you “steampunk music”?

Creating a mixture of music using genres and elements, that don’t usually go together, and centering the product around a steampunk universe we created.

Q) We are at the end of interview, now you have a free space and you can say what you want to our the readers?

Well, give our songs a listen, and if you like ‘em, support us on Facebook and youtube, show it to your friends too! Hopefully, we meet in the Summer! 😉

Cheerz,
Don from LOTM
